Community members organize unity walk and block party to celebrate Union City’s diversity #UCUnityWalk

UNION CITY, CA – Youth and faith groups, community representatives and advocates are invited to participate in a unity walk and block party sponsored by the Youth Violence Prevention Coalition.

The event will begin with a check-in at 10:00AM at Union Landing, where the unity walk will begin. The walk will conclude with a block party at Alvarado Park, which will feature entertainment, food, speakers and community resource tables. Community organizations are invited to walk with their banners and signs. The block party will allow community members to get to know each other while highlighting Union City’s diversity. Attendance is free for all ages.

The Youth Violence Prevention Coalition is a grassroots collective that was formed in August 2007 when local parents, students and organizations including Congregations Organizing for Renewal, Filipino Advocates for Justice, Union City Pastor’s Alliance and city and school district staff came together following the increase in youth related violence in Union City. The coalition has engaged over 700 people and was successful in getting community support for a 2008 parcel tax that currently funds violence prevention and intervention services. The coalition’s newest participating organization is the Afro-American Cultural & Historical Society, whose focus is to share black history through education and cultural activities as well as network with other multi-ethnic groups.
